Abstract

This project investigates a method to define a space to measure similarity of various visual stimuli. While this space geometrically represents the similarity of visual stimuli, it is also calibrated based on human visual perception. The expected outcomes are:
  • A geometrical definition of similarity among visual stimuli
  • A mapping between the geometrical distance and the visual perceptual distances of visual stimuli

Aim

This project investigates a method to define a space to measure similarity of various visual stimuli. While this space geometrically represents the similarity of visual stimuli, it is also calibrated based on human visual perception. The expected outcomes are:
  • A geometrical definition of similarity among visual stimuli
  • A mapping between the geometrical distance and the visual perceptual distances of visual stimuli

Background

When we generate visual representation of complex data, they design of visualization often rely on our past experiences and examples.  Although there were some known rules in visual design, many still rely on their intuition knowing little about the effectiveness of representations and our perceptual capabilities.

The design in Information Visualizaiton research typically focuses on which design works best and little attention was paid to finding out how and why those design work.  We believe that it is very important for us to equip with scientifically sound approach in designing effective information visualizaiton.

Dev Env

This project will involve implementation of various user experiments, and we would like to ready a wide range of audience.  Hence, we will use web-based development.

Currently the followings are considered:
  • JavaScript + HTML5
